In the current day and age every small business owner needs to ask himself or herself the following question. Is my business vulnerable to being hacked? The answer may scare you because it is a resounding yes. In fact, every single company across the globe is vulnerable to being hacked. Cyber security has never actually been about securing each and every plausible entry point. It’s just not possible. Instead, the objective should be to perform a risk assessment in order to properly identify your most essential assets. It will also determine where these assets are most susceptible to hackers so that the threat of a cyber attack can be alleviated.

First and foremost, you simply cannot appear to be the weakest of the bunch. Perhaps you’ve heard the old tale about two men who were in the African plains? Well, they came across a large male lion. One of the men bends down to tie his shoes. The other man asks him “how are you going to outrun a lion? The first man says, “I don’t need to outrun the lion, I only need to outrun you.” The exact same principal applies to your organization’s cyber security. Most cyber criminals are in the business of picking the low-lying fruit. That means they are not typically looking for a challenge, they are targeting companies that have computer systems that are easy to hack.

The good news is that if you have enough controls in place, the vast majority of these cyber thieves will give up and try to break into someone else’s system. You also need to keep in mind that comprehensive system security is basically impossible. So instead of worrying about the items that are unimportant, it is far more feasible to concentrate on the items that are important. That means you need a risk assessment of the system in order to help distinguish the key components.

In essence, the risk assessment will go along way in helping you determine what has value to you and what may have value to a cyber criminal. The next step is to analyze where the valuable assets are exposed. Once that occurs the door to the safe can be closed and locked.
